Molasses Lick Buckets Explained: How Free-Choice Supplementation Works

A molasses lick bucket is a solid or semi-solid block made from molasses – the sugar-rich by-product of sugar beet and sugarcane processing – blended with minerals, vitamins and trace elements. Animals lick the surface and take in small amounts at a time.

Because intake is free-choice, each animal regulates its own consumption. Compared with loose powder or granular minerals, this means less waste and a much lower risk of animals over-eating the supplement.

The natural sweetness of molasses is what makes the system work: animals return to the bucket voluntarily and regularly, which makes it an effective way to supplement stock spread across large pastures or extensive grazing systems.

Each formula in the Gold Lick Bucket range is matched to a specific group – beef cattle, dairy cows, calves, or sheep and goats – so the mineral and vitamin profile reflects that group's physiology rather than a one-size-fits-all compromise.
